You know when you are little and getting a bike is probably the most monumental thing that has ever happened to you? That feeling. . . . freedom. Finally you can cruise up and down the street with your friends. No worries in the world and lots of places to explore. Now it only takes 3 minutes to speed as fast as you can around those corners to your friends house on the next block. Empowering for sure. My first bike was red. . . sparkles on the red banana seat, streamers coming from the handlebars and a white basket on the front to store all of my important stuff in. I know you are jealous. Loved the bike. It took me places.
Back then I rode my bike for fun.
It didn't cost money.
It made my mom happy to have all the kids out of the house.
It was good exercise. . . plus little kids just look cute riding their bikes.
I still ride my bike for fun.
I pay people large amounts of money to do it.
It doesn't always make my mom happy.
It is still good exercise
(like loose 8 pounds in one day exercise -- don't worry it will come back)
I don't look cute doing it. One word - Spandex.
Yet, I still ride my bike for fun.
On Saturday I did a century ride. The Tour de Park City. I knew what I was getting myself into because Mike and I had gone and driven the "hard" part of the route so that I would know what to expect. Still didn't expect it. By far the hardest century I have ever ridden. Lots of climbing and head-wind for the last 30 miles of the ride made for some challenging times.
Totally worth it.
It took me 6 hours and 38 minutes. I averaged just over 15 miles per hour, so I felt pretty good about it.
I wish I had taken pictures, but didn't have my camera. The scenery was beautiful which made the ride a lot more enjoyable. If you are going to ride over a hundred miles you might as well like what you are looking at and where you are going.
Mike rode the 170 route - He is AMAZING - so it was fun to just hang out after the ride waiting for him to finish and watch all the cyclist come in.
It is nice to know that I am not the only person who still rides my bike for fun!

I wish I could be like you. Seriously.
I got stuck behind a truck that insisted on going 15 mph through our neighborhood. My first thought? "Amber could totally ride her bike faster than this guy!" ~sarah (meehan)
Hey Amber! I don't know if I've ever commented on here, but if I have it was a long time ago... anyway, your post reminded me of something that has to do with your first bike, when we lived by each other so long ago....the Amber license plate. I can't remember if we both had one, or what...but the story you told me about that always made me laugh :) I'm sure you could find one for your bike now if you still want one ha ha!
Paraphrasing Kevin Henkes, "Wow...all I can say is wow."
Amber,
That is so awesome that you rode in that. I love reading your blog...it makes me smile. :)
