Rainy Days and Mondays

I grew up with a dad who loves music, and a mom who dislikes any music with a beat. . . Yes, you heard me right - any music with a beat. Our conversations would usually go like this:

Child: Why can't I listen to this?

Mom: I just don't like the beat!

Child: Mom, it is not even bad music.

Mom: You know that I don't like music with a beat.

Child: Mom, all music has a beat

Mom: Not all music has a beat like this.

Child: Whatever!

Yes, this was a common occurence in the Ostler household. My dad, loves music and my mom doesn't like music with a beat. There is no way to have music without a beat, but my music impaired mother doesn't quite understand that.

However, my mother would listen to The Carpenters, the Tabernacle Choir, and the family favorite James Gallaway (he plays the flute. . it is horrible). So on days like today I always think of the song "Rainy Days and Mondays" by the Carpenters! thanks mom :)

Do you think this is why I still have to listen to hard rock in the car by myself?

Jimmy and Ben want to say they love you, and they like music with a beat too! In fact you should heat them play their instruments, usually pots and pans, but occasionally with the play drum and harmonica they have.

(Jimmy says Luke loves you too)

Amber, the students hear music coming from our apartment. One will say, who is listening to that music--usually something fun from the 60s--with a beat. The other student responds, "that has to be Brother Ostler!" How would they know that it could not be Mom... hmmmm???

Amber, It was the music with the HEAVY beat that bothered me and irritated me. I love music, it just needs to be the music that feeds my soul. I love you and love your music too. Love, mom
